Expanded Programs & Options For 2012!
2012 marks the 16th year of our exciting Rock Academy summer programs, and we’re introducing our weekly Learn To Play instrument camps to the mix that offers something for everyone at every level. We’ve added an extra week to our popular Rock Academy program to accommodate everyone that wants to attend our nationally recognized band camp, and we are now offering sessions in our Raleigh and Wake Forest locations during the same weeks to accommodate year around and traditional school schedules. Please see the information and schedules below to decide which program and weeks are right for you. If you’re not sure or have any questions please let us know. We’re here to help with advice and to answer any questions.
2 Camps to Choose From – Which Week Long Program Is Right For You?
Rock Academy
The Ultimate Band Camp Experience.
Already playing your instrument and know you’re ready to play in a band and make your music and sound become reality? Been taking lessons for 6 – 12 months and want to play with others, write your own music and perform in a professional concert? Then Rock Academy is for you.
Now in our 16th year of our summer Rock Academy sessions, these are week long programs that end with a concert featuring your band playing your music. Our Rock Academy sessions are known for the amazing concerts that our campers put on after only one week of working together to make it all happen. The bands sound like they have played together for more than 6 months and the musicianship is incredible. However, in today’s music world it takes more than just picking up your instrument, plugging in and jamming. Musicians today have to know how to write and perform and get their sound, and they have to be able to promote themselves and rely on an ever growing technology factor to be a musician, and that’s what they’ll learn in these week long summer programs. we are recognized as one of the very first music schools to offer this innovative “School of Rock” format when we started Rock Academy in 1996, so we hope you’ll join us for one great week of music making. Be sure to see 2011 Rock Academy concert footage here.
“Perhaps the coolest music camp offered in North Carolina, no wonder Progressive Music Center has people from New York, Louisiana and Florida coming each summer. If they can come all that way then this is certainly a “must-do” for every local musician”.

Learn To Play Focus Camps
Learn To Play A New Instrument Or Get Better On Your Current Instrument.
Not everybody wants to play in band or perform in front of others, and some people are just starting out on their instrument and are not quite ready to play in our full band Rock Academy programs. So if you’re not ready to play in a band for any reason, or just want to learn to play an instrument, then our week long Learn To Play focus sessions are for you. Learn To Play offers a fun week long program for guitar (electric and acoustic), drums, piano/keyboard and voice (sing your favorites and learn the styles of Selena Gomez, Adele, Beyonce and more) where you learn the fundamentals of the instrument and various musical styles. Although there is no finale concert like our Rock Academy program, attendees will work in a group with an instructor learning their instrument. These are great for track out year around students, learning another instrument or getting some focused study on your current instrument.
We will offer a Learn To Play camp the same week as a Rock Academy camp is happening at our other location, so if a Rock Academy session is going on in our Raleigh location a Learn To PLay focus session will be held during the same week (and same hours) in our Wake Forest location. And it doesn’t stop there. Learn To Play focus sessions will continue even after the summer winds down so year around school students in Raleigh and Wake Forest will have the opportunity to join us when they are tracked out of school.
2012 Schedule
The Details
Everyone is here to play and not watch movies and sit around doing nothing. Our musicians make new friends and increase their self expression/self confidence and creativity. Our Rock Academy camps sell out every year so early registration is strongly recommended to secure the dates that work for you. Big discounts are also in place for both Learn To Play and Rock Academy for early bird registrations and other discounts apply for multiple students from the same family (and for attending multiple weeks).
Who Can Attend and How Old Do You Have To Be?
Our Rock Academy sessions are a good mix of male and female drummers, guitarists, bassists, piano/keyboardists, vocalists, and a bunch of other instruments in between. In year’s past we’ve had kids that attended and played trumpet, trombone, flute, violin, tuba and a bunch of other cool instruments. We were able to work these instruments into the band format and we had a great time. Call us if you have an “alternate” instrument outside of the rock band set-up and we’ll discuss it and see how it will fit in for the camp week you are interested in.
Learn To PLay attendees will be those interested in learning to play anew instrument, brush up on skills and learn different techniques, theory, styles of music (jazz, rock, funk, gospel, blues, metal, contemporary Christian, country, etc..)
Our sessions are also open to everyone, even if you’re not a student at Progressive Music Center. Ages vary depending on the week but in years past we have had Rock Academy attendees as young as 6 and adult campers in their 40′s, 50′s and 60′s. Our opinion is that music has no age requirements and knows no age limits. We’ve had bands with an 8 year old drummer and 18 year old guitarist and the drummer was one of the best players in the band. The 8 year old had a few years of lessons and was a tremendous player, so he may not hang out with the 18 year old socially, but musically they were a good match.
Both Rock Academy and Learn To Play attendees will be placed according to age and ability.
When & Where Are Rock Academy and Learn To Play sessions Held?
Sessions will take place at Progressive’s Raleigh, NC (Brier Creek) and Wake Forest, NC (The Factory) locations Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 3 PM. Drop off starts at 8:30 AM and pick up starts at 3:00 PM but we do offer options for early drop off and late pick-up, just ask and we’ll try to work with your schedule.
What To Bring in 2012
Rock Academy: Drummers should bring a pair of drumsticks. Guitar/Bass players should bring their guitar/bass and amps. Brass/Woodwind players should bring their respective instruments. Keyboard players can bring their own keyboard (recommended). We do have amps, sticks and keyboards available if you can not transport your own gear.
Learn To Play: Keyboard/Piano players – instruments are provided however if you want to bring your own keyboard you are welcome to do that. Drummers should bring a pair of drumsticks. Guitar/Bass players should bring their guitar/bass and amps.
Content & Schedule
Rock Academy: Our week long Rock Academy sessions are built around our year around Rock Academy program giving each attendee the opportunity to make music and play in a band for the entire week ending with a concert (**held in our Wake Forest facility**) on the Friday evening of the last day of your camp week. Over the course of the week the bands will pick a band name, arrange original and cover songs, and work together to put on a concert at the end of the week. Progressive Music Center instructors will work with each band to ensure they are staying on track and performing to the best of their abilities.
Learn To Play: Our week long Learn To Play sessions are designed to teach beginners the basics of an instrument (pick between electric/acoustic guitar, drum and percussion, keyboards and voice). Attendees will learn proper playing techniques, theory, different genres of musical styles (jazz, rock, blues, etc..) and how they all relate. Learn To Play sessions are great for beginners and intermediate players.
Food
Snacks, sodas and water are available in our drink and snack machine (Wake Forest location) and we will have some drinks and water on hand, but everyone should bring lunch, drinks and any snacks they want Monday – Friday. We have a microwave and refrigerator if you need to keep it cold or warm it up. There are also a few restaurants that are within walking or driving distance. Some teachers make a food run so we will be happy to bring you something back if you ask.
